PIARC: a Nomadic Association

PIARC, the World Road Association, often prides itself on its longevity, which reflects the stability and strong sense of commitment among its members. And it’s true: backed by the support of 129 governments to date and by its experts (1,800 in the Technical Committees for the 2024–2027 work cycle), PIARC is akin to a robust old lady – one who has weathered many crises, especially the turbulence of a tumultuous 20th century, and knows how to rejuvenate her skin just often enough to keep the wrinkles at bay. While the archives grow over time, the original enthusiasm seems undiminished, and the topics addressed by the association continue to evolve as technologies advance and new challenges emerge. Some of the older members may complain about increasingly burdensome procedures, the growing complexity of methods and claim that things were better in the past. They aren’t always wrong, but this is also the price to pay for ever-higher expectations from member governments, who have the same demands of their own administrations; PIARC cannot escape this general trend.
